1 Can two motorcycles using Bluetooth communicate with each other?
By using two helmets that are both equipped with BX4 systems (or subsequent versions), bike-to-bike communication is possible up to a maximum distance of about 500 metres, in open field, with no obstacles.

In case the bike-to-bike intercom is open and connection with the other pilot is lost due to range limits being exceeded, the system will automatically reconnect as soon the two motorcycles are within a distance such as to allow communication.

2 At a high volume, the loudspeaker emits distorted sounds. What should I do?
Sound quality depends on the audio equipment used and on the volume level. The volume of the audio device or of the BX4 should be adjusted so that it is not too high, as this might distort the sound.

Warning: Listening to other equipment should not interfere with driving the vehicle, which is top priority. Carry out all operations on the electronic equipment and on the N-Com system with the vehicle stopped, in compliance with Traffic Regulations.

Warning: Listening to high volume levels can distract you from driving the vehicle and may result in dangerous situations or reduce the ability to hear external noise.

Warning: Listening to high volume levels may result in hearing damage.

3 Can the BX4 software be updated?
Yes, by downloading the “N-Com Wizard” programme from the "download" section.

1 Is every mobile phone equipped with Bluetooth technology compatible with the BX4 system?
The BX4 system is certified by the Bluetooth SIG Association, and it is therefore compatible with mobile phones equipped with a certified Bluetooth system. However, not all the functions on mobile phones might be available. For further information, refer to the Internet site.
2 Can I connect my helmet, via Bluetooth, to both the passenger and a mobile phone at the same time?
Yes. The BX4 system allows each helmet, the rider’s or the passenger's, to maintain connection to the phone and to the other helmet.
3 If the rider is connected to both a mobile phone and the passenger, what happens when the phone rings? Can the passenger hear the phone conversation?
The connection between the rider's helmet and the passenger's is put on hold and the rider is able to take the call. The passenger will not hear the caller's voice, and will not be heard by the caller.
Rider and passenger will be automatically reconnected at the end of the phone call.
If you wish, you can activate the “Conference Call Function”.
4 What do you mean by the "Telephone Conference Function"?
When a call comes in on a mobile phone connected via Bluetooth to a BX4, the Rider-Passenger intercom is temporarily cut off. If you wish, however, you can share the incoming call with the other helmet by simply opening the intercom manually during the phone call (by briefly pressing "on").

Caution: this function is available only if the Pillion Passenger helmet is also equipped with a N-Com system provided with the same function.

5 Can I listen to music via Bluetooth connection with my mobile phone?
You can listen to music via Bluetooth connection with a mobile phone in Stereo mode if the mobile phone is equipped with an A2DP profile. To check if this is the case, please refer to your mobile phone manufacturer’s webpage or go to www.a2dp.info.
Some mobile phones send music to the helmet by means of the Hands-Free (HF) profile, which is normally used for phone calls. The resulting audio quality will be inferior and sound will be emitted in Mono mode.
6 Can the sound volume be adjusted during a phone call too?
Yes. Each time "+" or "-" are pressed (a confirmation beep is heard in the earphones), the volume goes up or down a level, until a high (maximum) or low-pitched (minimum) beep is sounded.
7 Can I use two mobile phones with the BX4 system?
The BX4 system can only connect to one device at a time. However, it can store more than one device previously paired up. When turned on, the system automatically searches for the last used device that can be found in its range.

1 It is always possible to listen to music via Bluetooth?
This function is only possible in case the paired-up devices (MP3 players, mobile phones) are equipped with A2DP profile.
2 What is A2DP?
A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) is a Bluetooth profile for high sound quality playback from an audio source equipped with this profile. N-Com BX4 is equipped with A2DP and can therefore be connected to mobile phones or music players that reproduce audio using this profile.
3 How do I know if my mobile phone has A2DP?
Please refer to your mobile phone manufacturer’s webpage or go to www.a2dp.info.
4 What is AVRCP used for?
AVRCP (Audio Video Remote Control Profile) is a specific Bluetooth profile designed to control, via Bluetooth, Mp3 players (or mobile phones) equipped with A2DP. With the N-Com BX4, you can use the Play, Pause, Forward (Next track) controls directly from the helmet, with no need for manual operations from the connected device.
5 Can I use a Bluetooth Mp3 player with A2DP profile and a mobile phone at the same time?
Yes. Just pair up the N-Com BX4.
6 Can I connect to another device via cable when I am listening to music with the A2DP profile?
Yes. However, one signal will overlap the other.
7 Can I stop Bluetooth music playback without cutting off audio connection via cable?
Press "+" for 2 seconds to activate the "Pause" control during Bluetooth audio playback. The audio via cable will still be transferred.
8 If the rider is connected to an Mp3 player via cable and to the passenger via Bluetooth, can the passenger hear the music? Is it possible to talk with music in the background?
Both rider and passenger will be able to hear the music. If the passenger is disconnected, he/she will be cut off and will not be able to listen to the music. While music is playing, the intercom is on and you can talk with music in the background.
9 Can I listen to music via Bluetooth (A2DP profile) and speak in intercom mode at the same time?
No. Another helmet cannot be connected via Bluetooth if the A2DP profile is used.
10 Can a passenger connected via Bluetooth listen to music from a Bluetooth Mp3 player?
No. It is not possible to connect a passenger and an Mp3 player via Bluetooth at the same time.
11 Can a passenger connected via cable listen to music from a Bluetooth Mp3 player?
Yes. The passenger will be able to listen to the music from the rider's Mp3 player and you will be able to talk to each other in intercom mode. The passenger will listen to high quality sound music in Stereo mode.
12 Can both helmets be connected to another device via cable?
If the two helmets are connected via Bluetooth, both can use the "IN" connector to connect to an audio device. The audio from the connected devices will be heard by both rider and passenger.
13 I am on the intercom via Bluetooth with my passenger and we want to listen to the same FM radio station. The passenger’s audio is low quality. What can I do?
Bluetooth intercom transmission of music sources (FM radio or MP3 reader connected via wire) occurs through a “Bluetooth Intercom” communication profile. This type of Bluetooth communication protocol is the “mono” type, with low quality. This means that the pillion passenger will hear music sources at a lower audio quality compared to the rider, in any event maintaining the balancing of voice communication at a higher level.
If you do not wish to share audio sources with the helmet connected via intercom, you can pair up the helmets according to the “Bike-to-Bike” mode (see controls diagram). By doing so, the audio of incoming sources will not be transmitted to the other helmet. The pillion passenger will be able to choose his/her favourite radio station, while keeping the Bluetooth intercom connection open with the rider.
14 I cannot listen to music stored on my mobile phone. What can I do?

Proceed as follows: pair up the mobile phone with the N-Com BX4. The “music via A2DP” connection is activated when you access the first menu of the N-Com system. The connection may require a few seconds (up to 10), and will be confirmed by an acoustic signal in the helmet. To start playing music, press “+” for 2 seconds. You will now be able to listen to music in the helmet (only when you are on the first menu of the N-Com device).

N.B.: With certain mobile phone models, in order to activate music via A2DP, you may have to start playing the music FIRST from the mobile phone and THEN from the N-Com device.

15 Can I talk in Bluetooth intercom mode with my pillion passenger without having to share with him/her the audio of external multimedia sources or of the FM radio?

If you want to talk in intercom mode with your pillion passenger, however without sharing with him/her the audio coming from an external source or from the built-in FM radio, you can carry out the “Bike-to-Bike” pairing up between the two N-Com systems, following the procedure described in the User manual.
By doing so, rider and pillion passenger can talk to each other, yet each one can listen to their own favourite radio station or external multimedia source.
In the “Bike-to-Bike” mode, the Conference Call and GPS functions ARE NOT active.

1 Is BX4 compatible with all GPS systems?
The system has been tested with some satellite navigators. It is recommended to refer to the compatibility table on the Internet site. Nolan cannot guarantee proper operation with GPS systems that have yet to be tested.
2 Can I use a GPS system whilst I am connected via Bluetooth to the passenger's intercom?
The BX4 system can manage both connections (GPS system and passenger's). During communication between the GPS system and the helmet, the intercom connection is interrupted and only resumed at the end of the GPS communication.
If you wish, you can activate the “GPS Conference Function”.
3 What do you mean by "GPS Conference Function"?
Thanks to the GPS Conference Function, you can keep the "Rider-Passenger" intercom open even while the satellite navigator is giving instructions, thus preventing the intercom to be turned off every time a message comes in from the navigator.

Note: this function is available only if the Pillion Passenger helmet is also equipped with a N-Com system provided with the same function.

4 Is it possible to be simultaneously connected to a GPS navigator and a mobile phone via Bluetooth?
The BX4 system can only connect to one device at a time. Some GPS navigators allow Bluetooth connection to specific mobile phone models.
In these cases, the BX4 will allow connection to a navigator and, through the navigator, to your mobile phone. Check the compatibility of your mobile phone with the navigator.
5 What should I do when I receive a phone call while my phone is connected to the GPS system via Bluetooth?
You have to answer by pressing the answer button on the navigator. Once the call has been answered, it will be transferred to the helmet. You then have to hang up through the navigator as well. If the phone is connected to the navigator, and the latter is connected to the N-Com system, it will not be possible to answer the call from the helmet.
6 I updated the Zumo 660. I can't pair my Kit Bluetooth to the GPS. What can I do?
Every time you do an update of the Zumo 660, the GPS generate "false pairings" that fill all the available memory. In fact, after updating of the Zumo, in the List of paired devices, you can see "blank dots" with no paired devices. To solve the problem, you have to erase all the pairings and try again to pair the Bluetooth system to the Zumo.

1 Is the X-lite helmet with X-Series activated safe?
X-lite N-Com helmets have received ECE 22-05 standard approval (currently in force in Europe) including when the N-Com system is activated. Consequently, Nolan helmets comply with legislative requirements, even when they are equipped with one of the N-Com communication systems.
2 What is the highest possible volume to listen to music with the X-Series system?
The volume of the system not only depends on the X-Series system, but also on the devices it is connected to (Mp3 players, mobile phones, radios, etc...).

Important: Adjust the volume of the X-Series system (where possible) and of the audio sources connected to it before using the system on the road.

Important: Adjust the volume of the X-Series system (where possible) and of the audio sources connected to it before using the system on the road. Prolonged exposure to high volume sounds might result in hearing damage.

Important information to avoid hearing damage
Permanent hearing loss might result from using the X-Series system at a high volume. Set the volume at a safe level. With time, listening to high volume sounds might feel normal, however it does lead to hearing damage. If you hear buzzing or muffled sounds, stop the playback and have your hearing checked. If you keep the volume low, you can increase your listening time without damaging your hearing.

3 What is  the top speed at which the X-Series system guarantees "acceptable" communication without any background noise?
There are many factors that affect communication (aerodynamic exposure of the motorcycle, helmet used, environmental noise, etc…), so it is impossible to define a limit beyond which communication becomes unacceptable.
4 Who can install the X-Series system?
Bluetooth Kit X-Series was devised for easy installation inside the helmet by the user. No special equipment or modifications are required for the helmet, since the helmet itself is designed to house the X-Series communication system.
5 Can I install the X-Series system on any helmet?
No. The Nolan Group devised the X-Series system specially for X-lite helmets with N-Com X-Series attachments. For a list of helmets with N-Com X-Series attachments, please visit the website.
6 Do I need to carry out any special operation before buying the system?
After installing the Bluetooth Kit X-Series (see instruction leaflet), you only need to pair up the Bluetooth Kit X-Series system with your mobile phone. In case the passenger's helmet is also equipped with an N-Com, X-Series or MULTI Bluetooth Kit system, you will also need to pair up the two N-Com systems (see instruction leaflet).
7 Do I have to pair up every time I use the X-Series system?
No. All pair-ups are stored in the memory, even when the helmets are switched off, and are maintained when the helmets are switched on again.
8 Can two motorcycles using Bluetooth communicate with each other?
This configuration is possible if the two helmets – equipped with a N-Com, X-Series, MULTI Bluetooth Kit system - are less than ten metres apart.

If the connection fails (a failed Bluetooth connection is signalled by a beep in the earphone), briefly press and hold the “on” button (acoustic signal). This activates the search for the other helmet.
9 At a high volume, the loudspeaker emits distorted sounds. What should I do?
Sound quality depends on the audio equipment used and on the volume level. The volume of the audio device or of the Bluetooth kit should be adjusted so that it is not too high, as this might distort the sound.

Warning: Listening to other equipment should not interfere with driving the vehicle, which is top priority. Carry out all operations on the electronic equipment and on the X-Series system with the vehicle stopped, in compliance with Traffic Regulations.

Warning: Listening to high volume levels can distract you from driving the vehicle and may result in dangerous situations or reduce the ability to hear external noise.

Warning: Listening to high volume levels may result in hearing damage.

14 What should I do if I cannot answer the call?
To answer the call, stop the vehicle in a suitable place (in compliance with the Highway Code), then briefly press one of the three buttons (“on”, “+” and “-”). “Briefly” means anything up to 1 second, depending on the phone used (not on the X-Series system).
15 My passenger is connected to an N95 mobile phone. When we talk to each other in intercom mode, I can hear myself in the helmet. How can I avoid this problem?
This problem occurs ONLY for software versions 2.00 or older (check software version by pairing up the Bluetooth Kit X-Series to any mobile phone and then reading the name displayed on the device screen). The problem can be solved by using the control that deactivates A2DP connection on the passenger's helmet (press "-" for 2 sec.). This will eliminate any feedback.
16 I own an N70 phone and sometimes it does not let  me make a voice call. When I press the “on” key, I get a low tone. What can I do?
Unfortunately, some phones perform badly due to their software. Although the phone does not allow voice calls, it stays connected to the X-Series system so you can still receive phone calls. Normally, receiving a phone call solves the problem. Should this fail to work, switch the phone off and switch it on again.
17 The Nokia N70 sometimes disconnects from the helmet when I make a voice call.
This anomaly, found in some software versions of the N70 model, is linked to improper management of voice calls. If the phone continues to cause problems, you will have to make calls directly from the phone. Do not make calls while you are riding.
18 Can I listen to the radio from a Nokia N70 phone connected to the X-Series system via Bluetooth?
No, you cannot listen to the radio directly from a Nokia N70 that does not broadcast radio sound via Bluetooth.
2.19 I own an iPhone and when I make or receive a call with the mobile phone connected to the helmet, the other person can barely hear me.
This anomaly is due to the software installed in the mobile phone.
Download the procedure to adjust the volume of the telephone conversation.
